[ mood | expectant ]

Occasionally it hits me, the immensity of what's happening tomorrow. The number of people involved, the amount of money being spent, the logistics of events like this... when I actively think about it it's pretty darn whelming. For the most part, though, I'm largely unaware of quite exactly is going to happen. I mean, everything's completely organised and ready to go, but I'm looking forward to the little surprises that come my way.

For those who don't know what I'm referring to... I guess this video says it all.

Signing off as a bachelor for the last time,

Julian/Jules/sqrnookle/nook

(P.S. - I also got The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening for ye olde Game Boy. While it's obviously not the most exciting thing to be occurring this week, I'm still pretty chuffed by it.)

Updation-y goodness! [18 Feb 2009|11:55pm]
[ mood | content ]

So it's been a while since this dusty lil' LJ has been updated. Heck, since October, which even by my slack standards is pretty dreadful.

But things continue apace, as they often do. I'm still unemployed (this time not for lack of trying), Uni recommences in a little under 2 weeks (last semester's results were good - good enough, in fact, to be asked to consider doing Honours in English once I've finished my BA, which should be the end of this year) and in exactly two months' time Immy and I will be all growed up and married. This isn't terribly scary or nervewracking; the amount of planning and organisation that has to still happen is, however. At least Immy and I now both have our outfits (and we've seen each other in them! *gasp!*) and the invites are out, so from here it's just the finer details.

And I've started having a creative spurt over the past few days - finally learning how to use Garage Band on Immy's Macbook has freed me up to start noodling and doodling bits and pieces. If anyone is interested in listening, I may even upload a little piece of music I wrote and recorded last night - nothing flash, but kinda pretty. I'm also planning on spending part of my stimulus package (should I get it) on finally getting myself an acoustic guitar. Or a MIDI keyboard. Or a regular keyboard. Or a new amp. SOMETHING musical, at any rate (and the rest probably on the dentist). (You can guess what my disposable income will be spent on once I get a job.)

And so whilst on a musical note, I'll end with a little meme from wheresmycow.
MeMeMe!Collapse )

To bed, all of you!

Doo de do - de doo du do doooo. [19 Sep 2008|12:22am]
So! I'm 25 now. Strange how these things happen.

So Immy and I flew into a Adelaide for a whirlwind trip, though most of our time was spent with family - with my grandmother's 90th birthday party and my uncle's 60th, my birthday kinda got put on the backburner, which I don't mind terribly much. It also seems to be that as you get older that birthdays start to feel less like 'birthdays', but that's all good. I'm more sad that I didn't get to spend yesterday with my sister on her 30th birthday, but I did give her a call in Scotland. She'll be back in less than a month, so I get to party with her then. On the upside, I got to hang out with my family and a whole bunch of cousins whom I adore and miss muchly from over here.

But in terms of birthday presnets, it turns out Immy had been puppet-mastering my family into getting me a specific present that's she been wanting to get me for a while: a ukulele!

And the rest of my birthday...Collapse )

One present from Immy that we picked up on Saturday was the new You Am I album, Dilettantes, and I'm loving it. For starters, the artwork is sublime:

You Am I have a reputation as the Australian version of the Stones, in terms of being a hard-rocking, working-kinda band - and that's certainly justified in many ways - but this album is seriously something else. There's not much more I can coherently say (a common problem when posting at 12:20am), but you can listen to tracks from the album on the band's official site - the media player is in the middle of the page, down the bottom. I'd highly recommend you check it out.

And now, for bed!

Small mercies [10 Sep 2008|01:26pm]
[ mood | ache-y ]

Well, it thankfully turns out that I don't have the flu, but just a general viral infection. Body's still aching like a mofo, though. But on the plus side, took some Nurofen Plus yesterday and even felt up to playing the guitar in the evening.

But I'm still waiting for the most recent stuff I took to kick in, so I think I'll just go lie in bed and watch Press Gang. Or I could go downstairs and watch some That 70s Show. Decisions, decisions...

P.S. - I'm gonna be 25 in 4 days. Sheeeeeeeet.

My ache-y break-y body... [09 Sep 2008|08:48am]
[ mood | sore ]

So last week was okay - had a small cold that mercifully only lasted a couple days, but I did get to go see some very cool stuff in the city. ACMI (the Australian Centre of Moving Images) currently has a season of 'Focus on Jim Henson', featuring all things Muppet-y and Henson-related. So on Friday night, we trekked out to watch 'Muppet History 101', featuring many rare clips and a talk on the history of the muppets and how they all came to be. Needless to say that it was awesome, most of all this:

But then yesterday, my throat starts hurting again, then in the evening my body starts aching... and yep, it looks like I've got the bloody flu. *facepalm* What's super-annoying about this is that I have a presentation today for my Cinema Studies subject which I will not be able to do (since walking from the bed to the bathroom is itself a gargantuan feat, let alone getting in to uni).

So I now must rest, munch on vitamin c and then rest some more - I need to be better by the end of the week, when I head back to Adelaide for my 25th birthday, my uncle's 60th birthday and my grandma's 90th birthday (it's also my big sis's 30th, but she's still over in Scotland, so we can't really celebrate that one yet).

*sleeps*

1 Hush Puppy| Something to say?

Greetings, and appologgies. [04 Sep 2008|10:36pm]
Greetings, LJ-land!

Apologies for not updating sooner; I know I'm slack, and shall endeavour to try to update more often.

First up - for those who I've not spoken to and were concerned - the debacle with clashing wedding dates is now all over: my friend graciously moved his wedding to mid-year, so we can all attend each other's weddings. I even attended the engagement party, which was actually a lot of fun. (does it say a lot about our social group that we spent most of the party outside the venue on a basketball court, huddling on benches and sharing cigars?)

Otherwise, life has been tumultuous but in a mostly good way - Immy and have uprooted and moved back to Melbourne-town, where we now happily live with our friends Jen and Taylor in the leafy suburb of Thornbury. I've transferred all my uni stuff over here (to La Trobe University), and that is all going rather well, despite the ridiculous boringness that is my History lecturer (overheard conversation after a lecture: "Is it possible to actually die of boredom?"). Job-hunting has so far been unfruitful for me, partially through some very unhealthy slackness, and also with issues with finding work to fit my uni timetable properly. Immy has found herself a good job though, back at the University of Melbourne (which makes this the third or fourth job she's had there).

The biggest problem in coming back to Melbourne is that I've left the musical friends I had behind in Adelaide, and as a consequence know basically no one I can play with. Part of it is a lack of equipment (my guitar amp is still in Adelaide; I plan on selling it and then buying one here), and again that slackness rears its head again. I guess I should just find someone to play with, and just get out there and do it and *then* start getting picky. :o)

Anyway, I'll try getting onto this thing more regularly, whether you like it or not. Adios!

Greetings from the land of elsewhere... [07 Jan 2008|12:57am]
[ mood | hello ]

So it turns out that I have a couple of failings as a boyfriend, the most important of which is that - after being together for 1 and 3/4 years - I had failed to mention that, as children, my sisters and I had a full set of Sooty, Sweep and Soo handpuppets. Obviously, neglecting to mention this was wrong of me, and I accepted my punishment willingly and without question.

:oP

But I have promised that upon our return to Adelaide, I shall be delving into the big cupboard of storage-ness to fish them out. I may even take some photos...

In other news - Merry Christmas and New Year's! Hope everyone had a good one - I spent my second Christmas away from my family (and first to not be in South Australia or Germany), as mum and dad have gone over to Europe to see my big sister Anna, who is working in Edinburgh at their Fringe. So Imogen and I trundled over at the beginning of December for my cousin Bianca's wedding and an early Christmas with my folks, sister Laura and Grandparents. Was nice - we had vol au vents at my sister's place. How posh.

For Christmas, I got a nice little bit of loot - an Elliott Smith CD (Figure 8) and a hilarious book, 'I Hate Myself And Want To Die - The 52 Most Depressing Songs You'll Ever Hear'. From her family, I also scored the complete Blackadder on DVD and a guitar slide (which was technically from her, she just couldn't afford it herself), so I was happy. My parents also sent over a care package full of knick-knacks, including a Thomas The Tank Engine (and Percy!).

New Year's Eve was also much fun - we drove down to Geelong to celebrate at capn_n_pye's place, along with jenskijen and eyebrowofdoom. It was lovely, if a little hot - 43 degrees without airconditioning can be a trifle unaccommodating**. But we did go swimming, and made vodka watermelon, and much amusement. We even enjoyed it so much, we had the four girls come round to our place two days later for Pad Thai before they head off onto their Bali trip.

But overall, life is good. Slightly terrifying, but good.

Lastly, if you want a good way to kill a couple of hours, go play this game. It's stupidly addictive.

Bis später!

*done because nobody seems to know that that was always the plan
**read: we got bugger all sleep

Of elections and etcetera... [24 Nov 2007|12:55am]
[ mood | tired ]

Tomorrow (alright, today, but you get the point) is Election Day.

I wonder how it'll turn out?

I know what I'll be doing though: baking, and listening to Roy & HG call the election on JJJ.

Happy votage, all*.

*except those of you non-Australians. but you already knew all that

Better living through technology? Hah! [24 Oct 2007|11:39pm]
[ mood | reflectedful ]

Technology really shits me at times. But that's a subject for a different post...

What this post is for is chiefly a recommendation. I'm not normally quite so blatant with the pimping, but this is an album that I think is really worth the effort.

But what album is this? Tim Rogers' latest solo effort, The Luxury of Hysteria.

I've already tried writing a description/review, but I end up sounding like a badly-written press release, so either click on the link above to check out some clips on his website, or order it somewhere like here.

In other news, I'm on a bit of a Doctor Who kick recently - picked up a 3rd Doctor story 'Inferno' yesterday for $19.95, and have already watched all 7 parts. Add to my watching of the 4th Doctor story 'Robot' the other day, I'm on a Classic-Who bender, it seems. I may even put up some icons that I've been making, if they don't turn out, y'know, shit. ;oP Next up - some Who audios, as well as the 3 or so DVDs I've bought and not yet watched...

Otherwise, life is as normal, more or less. What's weird is that several other couples we know got engaged around the same time we did (a couple of months either side), and all of them are getting married before us. Heck, my cousin - who got engaged in June - is getting married this January! Makes us seem positively slothful! :oP

I keep wanting to write songs and do band stuff.. though with the whole 'moving-back-to-Adelaide' coming up in a month or two, it'll have to wait. I just need to find a good drummer....

On a side note, my parents sent over a little present for me to open on my actual birthday**, which turns out to be... a miniature remote-controlled helicopter.

Weird. :oP

Oh well - come morning, I shall take to the skieeesssss!!!!

It's been one of those days... [04 Aug 2007|12:45am]
[ mood | indescribable ]

Tonight, I finally crossed off one of - if not the - biggest items on my 'things-to-do-before-I-die' list.

I met Sylvester McCoy*, in person.

Some of you would get this; others won't. But I will just say that I have finally achieved an experience that I have been wanting since, well, honestly since I can remember.

This makes me more than a little excited.**

In case I hadn't mentioned it, Sylvester was in a touring Royal Shakespeare Company production of King Lear, which was absolutely brilliant - I've seen some Shakespeare in my time, but never with actors of this calibre before.

'What kind of calibre?', I hear you ask? Well, we met the kind actor who played Lear, and some of you may have heard of him before...

.

*The Seventh Doctor, my dear puppies.
**Even this is an understatement.

Melbournites/Australians!! [31 Jul 2007|12:12pm]
For those who care....

Monty Python's Spamalot is coming to Melbourne at the end of the year, and they're having a special ticket sale on today only in Fed Square - the tickets only get released properly come September, so this is quite a big thing. They're selling them 'til 8pm tonight, so if you want 'em, get in there soon.

Immy and I now have tickets for the 13th of Decemeber - Row B, right in the centre. :oD :oD :oD Excited!

One snowball to rule them all... [23 Jun 2007|08:50pm]
Hobart is FREAKING COLD.

See?

Otherwise, life has been going pretty good. We've been working for the most part, with a few brief tourist-y sidesteps - the Cadbury Factory and Cascade Brewery on Thursday, and today we visited Port Arthur, the place where the bad convicts were sent to if they misbehaved after arriving here. We've even bought two DVDs - Im got Stranger Than Fiction (which we saw in the cinemas when we were here last) and I got Doctor Who - The Mark of the Rani (yes, I am a geek). We're so decadent, we've even had Indian takeout for dinner the past two nights in a row! *gasp!* Oh, the humanity.

Dammit, I wanna get home. Grrrr.

Hope you're all having a fun time (and I can put bets on you being warmer than us, damn you all).
1 Hush Puppy| Something to say?

So. [11 Jun 2007|12:09am]
Well, both hard drives are okay - we have an external USB HDD caddy that we checked them both with - I just don't have a compy that works to *use* them with.

And oddly enough, I'm not using either of Immy's laptops to type this - tonight we plugged in the Mac Mini to play around with it, and it's rather fun. I still don't think I could ever use a Mac as my main computer, but it's quite shiny. Before making its way to us, someone even upgraded it to the full 2GB of RAM, which makes my plan to turn it into a Music Making Machine all the more attractive. :o)

But the answer is, I think, to buy me a new PC upon our return from Hobart. Which is actually kind of exciting, so yay me!

In other news, widgets on the dashboard are fun. The end.
Something to say?

Oh BUM. [10 Jun 2007|12:27am]
So.

My compy is dead.

It's been quite schizoid of late - randomly freezing (usually whilst listening to music, which is slightly annoying) amongst other things - but tonight I turned it off to give it a bit of a rest and then went to turn it back on.

But it didn't.

It won't even start booting up (so I'm suspecting the motherboard or BIOS are rooted, rather than the hard drive). To be honest, I was planning on getting a new system anyway, but it's upped and died on me two days before we leave for Hobart to work, and I can't update my iTunes*! It couldn't have waited till we got back?!?

GRRR.

Thankfully, one of Im's friends has loaned us an old computer of hers in which the hard drive died, so I'm gonna try putting my hard drives in that, just to get a hold of my iTunes.

The other strange thing to come out of this is that Im's mum pretty much forced a Mac Mini upon us - one of the Intel Dual Core ones. It won't be a replacement - I have too much stuff for PCs - but I'm thinking about converting it into a Music Making Machine... *ponders*

And oh yes - I may have not mentioned it earlier: Immy and I are heading over to colder shores (i.e. Hobart) on Monday to work for the next three weeks. Net contact may be slightly sparser, but we shall endeavour to hang around and annoy you all as per usual. :o)

In other news, I finally got to meet the even-more-gorgeous-in-person sheneverdreams the other day, after knowing her online for years. Had a lovely couple of hours walking around the city as well as lunch. :o) Soon I'll have met more than half my flist in person! Scary thought. I also threw my back out doing physical work, which just proves that work is the devil. *nods*

*The worst bit - I've got a bunch of stuff I had lined up to take with me to listen to while I work. GRRRR.
